To me this question is a lot like smoking in the 1960's – when you talk to someone that was a smoker back then, they usually say "we didn't know it was bad for us." Want a serious skincare philosophy? Let's take a look at a complete approach that will protect your skin's health and "fix" any problems that you are currently experiencing.

First things first; read the labels on all of the products that you are currently using. For your overall health and well-being, you should stop using the ones that contain parabens and other artificial preservatives. To prevent premature aging, stop using the ones that contain mineral oil, paraffin wax, petrolatum or petroleum jelly. Those are the most common ingredients in moisturizers, but they are not really moisturizers and they are not truly beneficial.

Alcohol-based products are drying and can lead to the appearance of age spots. Added fragrances (whether artificial or concentrated essential oils) are typically to blame for allergic and adverse reactions.

A serious skincare philosophy is formed around the idea of doing "no harm". If a product "may" cause an unwanted effect, why use it?

In the pharmaceutical industry, they weigh the "risk-benefit ratio". If the perceived benefits outweigh the risks, they release a new drug. The cosmetic industry is similar.

They don't have to prove that a compound is "safe" for use. Except for a few banned substances, they are allowed to use any compound that they choose, whether or not those compounds are likely to cause immediate or future reactions. A case-in-point example is the sunscreen, oxybenzone.

Oxybenzone was released and immediately began showing up in lotions and creams, despite warnings from scientists that as a derivative of benzophenone, it could increase free radical production and activity in the skin's cells, which makes it a "probable" human carcinogen.

Studies have shown that the incidence of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin-cancer) is higher among regular sunscreen users. It is believed that free radical damage caused by many sun-screening compounds is a contributing factor.

A safe and serious skincare philosophy must advise that we respect the detrimental affects of the sun by avoiding overexposure, without relying on minor sunscreens. Zinc oxide is a safe and effective sunscreen, but is rarely included in products designed for use on a daily basis.

Once you are sure that the ingredients you are using can do harm you, then you start to look for nutritive creams that support the skin's health. This idea is similar to the way that we take daily nutritional supplements to ensure that our energy levels are high and our body's are healthy.

The best serious skincare philosophy, that I am aware of, promotes the daily use of creams and lotions that contain essential fatty acids, protein complexes, vitamins, minerals and coenzymes. All of these can be found in botanicals and other naturally occurring substances that have proven safety records.

Wakame kelp, for example, is a type of seaweed that can be emulsified for use on a daily basis, without appearing heavy or green. It contains numerous vitamins and minerals, as well as plant antioxidants that support the skin's moisture content and prevent free radical damage.

A complete serious skincare philosophy could fill a book. But, hopefully this article has pointed you in the right direction.
