Celebrity makeup artists have tons of tips and techniques for applying makeup that most people never heard of! Want to be one of the few in-the-know? Celebrity Eyes:

Makeup artists have many tricks up their sleeves to make celebrities' eyes pop! They first put an eye shadow primer or some foundation on the eyelids, so that the eye shadow has something to hold onto. For eye shadow colors, they'll select three shades which are variations on the same color (i.e. light green, medium green, and dark green), or in the same neutral color family (i.e. beige, brown, and dark brown). They will put the lightest color on the brow bone, the medium color on the lid, and the darkest color in the crease. This will emphasize the shape of the eyes and make them stand out!

Other tricks for glammed-up, red carpet eyes include lining the lower inner rim of the eyes with a white pencil to make them appear bigger and applying shimmery clear lip gloss to the top eyelids to make eyes sparkle. Celebrity makeup artists also apply shimmer powder under the brow bone to draw more attention to the eye area and they always smude eyeliner with a Q-tip to make it look less severe or smokier.

To create cat-eyes (like Brigitte Bardot in the sixties or Pamela Anderson today), celebrity makeup artists use dark brown or black eyeliner to exaggerate the end of the eye so it turns up slightly. If you decide to go this route, remember that smudging is the key to perfecting this look!

Celebrity Eyelashes:

Celebrity makeup artists also have many secrets for eyelashes! They always curl eyelashes first to maximize length and curl. They then dust them with powder which makes the eyelashes look much thicker after the mascara is applied! Celebrity makeup artists will often use two coats of mascara, the first will be a lengthening or separating formula, and the second, a thickening formula, to max out eyelash potential! Mascara clumps are combed out between coats.

For special occasions celebrities may use false eyelashes (their secret is dark eyelash glue) or may have eyelash extensions applied which are semi-permanent variations.

Celebrity Eyebrows:

Celebrity makeup artists know that enhancing the shape of the eyebrows is one of the most dramatic ways to improve a celebrity's appearance. Celebrity makeup artists use Treezerman brand tweezers most often to shape eyebrows. They tweeze the hairs under the arch of the eyebrow to further emphasize it and pluck away any strays. Eyebrows are filled in with the feathery strokes of an eyebrow pencil in either "blonde "or "taupe" for blondes, "auburn" for redheads, and light brown or medium brown for brunettes. Only black-haired gals should fill in their eyebrows with a "dark brown" eyebrow pencil" and nobody should use a black eyebrow pencil as it looks too severe. A secret weapon of celebrity makeup artists is brow sealant, which keeps this brow look in shape all day.

Celebrity Concealer:

Amazing Concealer by Amazing Cosmetics is favored by many celebrity makeup artists. Concealer is usually applied with an eye shadow brush. It is applied in thin layers which are "built up" until the blemish is covered. Concealer typically is applied before foundation. For really red blemishes, makeup artists often use a green concealer first which tones the redness down under foundation.

Celebrity Foundation:

Laura Mercier Foundation is very popular with celebrities. Foundation is usually applied by celebrity makeup artists with a sponge for the most natural looking coverage. Celebrity makeup artists use a foundation primer which is worn between your moisturizer and your foundation. This product refines the skin and helps foundation stay in place all day. Celebrity Powder:

Celebrity makeup artists almost always use loose powder in a translucent or skin matching shade. While these are powder blushes, there are other makeup artists who prefer gel blush because of the dewy, healthy glow it imparts. Blush is never applied with anything but a big, fluffy brush. Celebrity Lips:

Question:  How do I apply and select makeup colors that will flatter me for my pageant photos and videos?  What is the difference in Natural Makeup and Glitz Makeup?  Should I use lots of shimmer makeup for Glitz?  Do 'photo-ready' or 'camera ready' makeup colors look heavy or fake?
 

Makeup is key to a flawless photo as well as looking your best on stage!  
 
Makeup colors that look best for photography and video are usually highly-pigmented, meaning they contain strong color pigments and are not sheer.  A highly-pigmented makeup color product will allow the user to apply a small amount to achieve a bit of color or it can provide darker, dramatic color when applied more heavily.  This allows flexibility for the user to achieve her preferred look.  Also, the strong color pigment in highly-pigmented makeup colors will hold up against the harsh lighting from cameras (no washed-out, ghostly makeup looks) and is longer lasting.
 
'Photo-ready' or 'camera ready' makeup does not have to appear heavy or fake.  With highly-pigmented makeup colors, the user has control over how much color she applies, whether she prefers a soft, natural look or a glamorous, dramatic look.  The purpose of makeup is to enhance and showcase your beauty, not cover it up! 
 
FOUNDATION:  To provide a smooth canvas for lip, eye and cheek colors, a foundation that is perfectly-matched to your skin color is essential.  The purpose of a perfectly-matched foundation is to simply 'even out' the facial skintone, not to add color to the face.  A perfectly-matched foundation color will match your neck as well, so that there is no tonal difference between the face and neck (no mismatched colors at the jawline and no applying foundation to the neck).   Use a creamy, opaque concealer to cover any dark undereye circles (these are very unflattering in photos, appearing as a 'tired' look).  Concealer can also be dotted carefully onto any untimely breakouts.  Seal both foundation and concealer with a loose powder (applied with a soft large powder brush) for a smooth, matte finish.  Do make sure that these three items - foundation, concealer and loose powder - are a perfect match to your skintone (no pinkish or peach-toned loose powders applied on top of your carefully matched foundation!).  FOUNDATION SHADE TIP:  To select a foundation shade that is an exact match to your skin, use natural (outdoor) light and a mirror.  Stripe several different sample shades from your jawline down onto your neck.  Look in the mirror while in outdoor light.  The shade that disappears onto your neck is the shade you want.  Your foundation shade can now be used to as a guideline color to carefully match your concealer and loose powder.  Using natural (outdoor) lighting for this process ensures there are no hidden undertones (pink, orange or red) in your foundations, concealers and powders.  Indoor lighting can hide undertones and distort some colors during the critical shade selection process.
 
COLOR:  After applying the foundation, concealer and powder, follow with lip, eye and cheek colors.  For long-lasting results under the warm stage lights, powder eye shadows and powder blushers are your best selection.  Another important makeup principle:  powder clings best to powder, meaning powder eye shadows and blushers will cling best to the powder you've used to seal your foundation, translating into longer-lasting results.  Blend each color product carefully, avoiding harsh lines, and check your work under a strong light or in daylight, if possible.  If you've applied a bit too much color, use cotton swabs to blend out any harsh eye makeup lines or smooth away overly dark shading.  Avoid attempting to correct mistakes with fingertips since the oils on the fingers can lead to messy, blotchy colors.  And if your blusher needs correcting, just use a bit of loose your loose powder over the blush to tone it down - and again, for best results, no hands on the face!   For guidance with makeup colors to flatter your gown, see our Dress Color Packages.  Within each Dress Color Package, you will find facial illustrations demonstrating color placement and blending for eye, lip and cheek colors.

IMPORTANT PHOTOSHOOT TIP:  Prior to your photo session, make sure to powder any shiny areas on your face.  A matte finish to your makeup will yield the best and most flattering photos!  (Avoid facial oiliness or shine by carefully blotting, not rubbing, oily areas with a tissue and lightly powdering the forehead, across nose, and chin.)  A shiny face in photos will appear very unflattering, so be sure to check your face in a mirror for shine and if needed, lightly powder right before your photoshoot!
 
NATURAL/GLITZ MAKEUP:  The difference between Natural Look Makeup and Glitz Dramatic Look Makeup is the depth and brightness of makeup colors. 

As an example using highly-pigmented eye shadows, try the following  for a basic Natural Look eye, use a blend of browns, beiges, or soft pink eye shadows; then use an eyeliner softly along the base of the upper lash line, as shown below. 

To use these same eye shadow colors for a basic Glitz Dramatic Look eye, add more emphasis in the crease and outer corners of the eyes with a darker brown, then highlight the lid and under the eyebrow with the beige or soft pink.  Also for a basic Glitz Dramatic eye look, eyeliner can be used along the base of the upper lash line and the outer corners of the lower lash line as shown below. 

Mascara application is recommended after completing the eye shadows and eyeliners.  The basic Glitz Dramatic eye look can easily be further glamorized by blending a bit of brighter eye shadow color into the darker tones or by using a shimmering highlight color on the lid.  But be careful with sparkle for photos, as too much sparkle on the eyes and cheeks can create too much reflection, causing a 'flare' on your face under the camera lights.  As an exciting finish for extra drama, add a set of glamorous false eyelashes or special effect eyelashes!
 
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT:  It is recommended to do a 'practice' makeup session at home a few times before your competition - a practice session with your makeup will be similar to a 'dress rehearsal' so you can see how you will look!  Practicing will also allow you to refine your application techniques.  If you choose to wear false eyelashes, definitely do a 'try-on' session at home prior to your event so you will feel comfortable applying them.  Eyelashes do feel different on the eyes and if you've never worn them, it make take a few minutes to get accustomed to them.  Plus, practicing your total makeup look will give you more confidence in your own makeup skills for your pageant and everyday!

Eye makeup application is one of the last few steps involved in the makeup application routine. It is a step that completes the makeup preparation, for often a little foundation and eye makeup is all you would need to pull of a glamorous and exciting look. It is the eye makeup routine of the entire makeup application process that really brings out the beauty of the makeup. Eye makeup could make the difference between a natural look, an exotic look, or a demure but sexy look.

Eye makeup comprises of all the makeup and makeup accessories that you would use to decorate or highlight your eyes. These include eye shadows, eyeliners, mascaras and even fake eyelashes. In fact, a good eyeliner and/ or eye shadow is all you could really need for one of the most beautiful eye makeup routines ever – irregardless of if you are in a hurry or if you simply prefer the softer look.

The first step of the eye makeup routine is to cover the eyes with foundation in the color of your skin tone. This is the basic step of every makeup routine, so one would assume that if you are making up you eye then you would be applying makeup to your entire face as well. The foundation application is necessary for the illusion of perfectly flawless skin with an even complexion.

Once the foundation is on, you can proceed to apply the eye shadow over the brow of the eyes and the crease of the eyelids themselves. The most recent trends in eye shadow application have seen a shift from the traditional three-color applications on the brow, the crease and the lid (from the lightest to the darkest colors) towards a single layer application or even a two layer application.

Generally though, a lighter color on the brow bone gives the impression of a brighter face and has the tendency to open up the eyes a bit more. Darker colors are commonly used at the crease of the eyelids for a dramatic effect. Additionally, natural tones or mild applications are common for daytime applications but bolder tones and colors are the popular trends for nighttimes.

Once the eye shadow has been applied, carefully brush off any extra eye shadow that may have gotten on your eyelashes or cheeks with your translucent (or brown powder) powder brush for a smooth finish.

The application of the eye shadow can be a stand alone eye makeup, or you could touch up with some eyeliner of your choice on the edge of the eyelid - heavy lines make a dramatic and bold statement, while finer lines are more subtle and demure.

Another eye makeup routine that accents the eye shadow but is totally optional is the mascara application. Long eyelashes are a wonderful accent to the face, and highlight the eyes even more. If you do not have long eyelashes and you desire the dramatic impact that it adds to the eye makeup, you may choose to use fake eyelashes.

Applying makeup correctly and having flawless, long wearing results starts long before you put the first hint of color on your face.  Preparation using the right products for both cleansing and moisturizing as well as the proper concealer and foundation is key in order for you to achieve overall success.  We will explore the 7 essential steps in flawless makeup application, recommending the best products for each step as we go.  From cleansing to adding the final touches, you will have a flawless complexion in no time. 

Step 1: Cleanse

To start, pick a quality cleanser that will gently exfoliate the skin, this helps clean deep in your pores and remove dead skin cells from the surface.  This also allows for all other products to go on smoothly and evenly, preventing blotching or clumping of in any particular areas of your face when it is time for makeup application.  A great exfoliating cleanser, for all skin types, is Peter Thomas Roth’s Botanical Buffing Beads.  This product is gentle enough for use twice a day without stripping your face of its natural oils. 

Step 2: Moisturize

Next, you need to apply a great moisturizer that is well-suited for your skin type.  If you have dry skin, look for a product that has a time-release component  and will keep renewing itself throughout the day.  If you have oily skin, look for an oil-free moisturizer that will not make your skin too oily.  If you have combination skin, look for an oil-free moisturizer and a moisture booster to use on the drier areas of your face.  This will help each area of your face stay hydrated at the correct levels all day long.  A great moisturizer for dry skin is, Philosophy’s Hope In A Jar for dry, sensitive skin.  I recommend Kinerase Clear Skin Moisture Light, for oily skin, it leaves a nice dewy finish on the face.  Finally, for combination skin, Oasis Face Hydrating Treatment and Oasis 24 Hydrating Booster by H20+ are my picks for an effective moisturizer and hydrator. 

*Tip: The best time to apply your moisturizer is immediately after you have washed your face and patted it dry slightly.  Your face should still be damp when you apply the moisturizer; this is when it is absorbed best. 

Step 3: Prime or Mattify

After you let the appropriate moisturizer soak into your pores for a few minutes (at least 3 minutes) then it is time to put on your primer.  A primer helps with preparing your skin for makeup application by making your face smooth and even as a painting canvas, in terms of texture.  This is a great choice for someone with dry skin, because it is water-based and also hydrating to the skin, which will prevent your makeup for looking ashy.  However, if you have combination or oily skin, a mattifyer would be a better choice for you at this step.  A mattifyer is a product that also evens out the texture of your skin for makeup application, but has the added benefit of absorbing excess oil.  This is important so your makeup will never look oily and greasy.  A primer I like is Vincent Longo’s Water Canvas Base Primer, it keeps your makeup from feathering or creasing because of its water-gel base.  For a mattifyer, Peter Thomas Roth’s Anti-Mattifying Gel provides great results and helps makeup wear smoothly for hours.

Step 4: Camouflage

This step is optional because it is only for those of you who have severe hyperpigmentation of the face, severe acne scarring, or extreme bags under one’s eyes.  Camouflage is just that, it is a camouflage that is more serious than a concealer and is used to completely hide an issue on someone’s face.  If you need to use this product, just dab a bit, with a makeup wedge, on to the exact spots you need it.  With the makeup wedge, gently blend the camouflage in, feathering it toward the edges of your face.  Since this is a heavier product, you do not want to use a lot.  A camouflage that has received rave reviews is Benefit Cosmetics’ Erase Paste.  It is great, because not only does it hide; it also brightens by reflecting light off of that area of the face.  

Step 5: Conceal

A concealer is also an optional step, but one that more of you are likely to use.  Concealers work well for hiding minor facial issues, such as age spots, slight hyperpigmentation, acne scars, etc.  As with the camouflage, you only want to use a small amount.  I recommend using a concealer brush for this step, as the small brush is very precise and you will be able to put it exactly where you want it.  Just dab a little in the areas that you need it and then blend it into your skin with a makeup wedge.  If you used a camouflage first, then gently go back over those areas and blend again.  You do not want your makeup to look as if it is standing up off of your face.  A concealer that I use faithfully is LORAC’s Coverup, they have shades for a wide variety of complexions. 

Step 6: Foundation

Next is the foundation, this is the product where many get confused, since there are so many different types.  For dry skin, a liquid foundation or crème foundation will work best.  To apply, get a clean makeup wedge and dab a generous amount (but not too much!) on your forehead, the bridge of your nose, chin and cheeks.  Next, start to blend the foundation, in a small dabbing motion, into your concealer and into the rest of your face.  You should constantly be working in the direction that is toward the outer edges of your face. NARS Liquid Balanced Foundation or Laura Mercier’s Silk Crème Foundation are sure bets.

 For combination or oily skin, an oil-free pressed powder would be best.  Repeat the same steps as above, except use a foundation brush instead and go in a swirling motion toward the edges of your face.  In either case, when finished applying the foundation, lightly dab excess off of your face using a makeup puff or cotton balls.  This will give you a more natural look.  LORAC’S Oil-Free Wet/Dry Powder Makeup is a great choice.

Step 7: Highlights

“Highlights” is what I consider to be the remaining parts of makeup application.  This includes eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lip gloss, and/or lipstick.  These items can be put on in moderation or not at all, as they are only the icing on the cake.  

For eyeshadow, less is always more, especially if you are new to makeup.  Using a soft eyeshadow brush, gently sweep your eyelids with a color you have chosen.  Once you have dipped the brush into the eyeshadow, gently tap the excess off before applying to your face.  COLORON Professional offers eyeshadow sets in various color palates, which is very useful when you want to find a shade that is just right for you.

For mascara, choose one that matches the color of your hair for the most natural results.  Dior DiorShow Mascara is a celebrity favorite because it volumizes, lengthens, and curls lashes all at the same time!

For blush, just a hint should be added to the apple of your cheeks.  This is the part of your cheek that sticks out when you smile.  Using a blush brush, lightly sweep your brush through the blush, tap off excess, and then gently glide across the apple of your cheek.  LANCOME BLUSH SUBTIL-Delicate Oil-Free Powder Blush is a red-carpet staple, because it is nearly impossible to put on too much blush with this product. 

For lips, lip gloss is best, it provides a softer finish and longer wear.  I do not recommend lip liner, even if you have thin lips, because it can run and make you have an off-center lip line.  My pick for lip gloss is CARGO’s XXX Shine Lip Gloss, it adds just enough color and stays in place for hours.

From cleansing to highlights, I know you are well on your way to applying makeup like a pro.  As with anything else, makeup application takes practice and with time you will get better and more efficient.  Don’t give up if you don’t get it the first time because soon you will have the flawless complexion of your dreams.
