single vs dbl quad core Mac Pro?

For playing say Call of Duty 4 or other good FPS games, watching tv and the general usage is there any difference? Is the software written to use the double processor quad core? If there is a difference is it even noticeable? Can I in the future change to a dbl processor myself by buying parts and installing them? Or cost wise would I be better to do it now?
Should I buy now or wait maybe 4-6 months for the new Mac Pro to come out. I only have a PowerBook G4 1.67 now and it is struggling to function.
I am stingy with a buck so I do not want to throw out my stuff every 3 yrs or so because it is too behind the times/obsolete.

I do mean the desk top model computer. I just bought the LG
LCD 25.5" 5MS W2600H-PF monitor for the new computer. Is $400 a good or great price for this monitors quality? Thanks again.

Well single core IBM PPC for the Mac went out with the Arc. These days all Intel Macs are dual core or in the case of the Mac Pro - quad or six cores - also Intel Macs run Windows and the latest MacBooks and MBPs have Nvidia graphics so YES there is a marked difference in gaming on a Mac.

Not sure when the Mac Pro is getting updated but there is nothing wrong with the current offerings.
